Unlike other emergencies such as an earthquake or civil war, a power outage is more likely to happen throughout the year. The better prepared you are, the greater the chance that you and your family will be comfortable after the lights go out.
Below are some tips that can help your family stay safe and comfortable during a long- or short-term blackout. (h/t to BackdoorSurvival.com)
Keep flashlights in several easily accessible locations around your home. Don’t forget to store spare batteries near them.
You can also prepare backups by stocking up on emergency candles and matches or lighters along with a candle lantern, oil lamp, or propane lantern.
Invest in a high-quality battery-operated radio, solar radio, or hand crank emergency radio so you can monitor the news.
Check your radio at least once of twice a year to ensure that it is in working condition.
If you use a landline at home, have at least one phone with a handset cord since many cordless phones will not work during a power outage.
Keep all smartphones charged and have a cell phone car charger so you can charge your phone in the car if its battery runs out.
If you prefer to cook even during a power outage, learn how to cook over an open fire or using charcoal or wood.
Get a manual can opener if you have a lot of canned food in your stockpile. Stock up on lab-verified organic food with a long shelf-life, such as organic nuts or freeze-dried fruits and vegetables.
To make the food in your refrigerator last a little linger, fill the empty space in your freezer with containers of water. The frozen water will displace air and keep food cold longer after the power goes out.
Always leave space in containers for ice to expand.
The minute your home loses power, have everyone check and unplug sensitive electrical equipment such as computers, televisions and audio equipment. (Related: Top 10 survival hacks for generating electricity.)
This is important because when the power comes back on, there may be power spikes that can damage delicate electronics.
If you have the budget for it, get a portable generator. Learn how to use the generator safely and test it monthly.
Store enough fuel to run the generator for at least one week.
